Tour de Stanley Park

Visit at Saxony House at the Vancouver Rowing Club. Lots of um-pah-pah-music...

Portrait at one of the most favorite spots in the park at the moment

West Vancouver behind the Lions Gate bridge. The lights are on Cypress Mountain were all the snow boarding events are being held. This also the mountain in all the news because of its lack of snow.

Walk through Olympia Land

Art plays a leading role at the Fairmont Pacific Rim, beginning with the building’s exterior. A million dollar artwork, created by UK artist Liam Gillick, wraps around the corner and up floors five through 22, providing a demarcation of the hotel and luxury residences above. The artwork consists of 2’ high stainless steel letters in Helvetica bold font and is a running line of repeated text:
lyingontopofabuildingthecloudslookednonearerthanwhenIwaslyingonthestreet
(Lying on top of a building the clouds looked no nearer than when I was lying on the street...).

The Olympic cauldron down at the waterfront between the new and old Convention Centres. It's stunningly beautiful.

TELUS World of Science is the Sochi House during the Olympics. The Russian House is only open from 12 noon to 5 PM... I guess after that it's vodka time.

The chimneys are from the Olympic Village. The neon lighting changes colours depending on the amount of energy that is being used.

Eric and I outside the Yahoo! house. Nothing special.

After 7 years the Opening Ceremony!

The celebrations were of course overshadowed by the death of Georgian luger Nodar Kumaritashvili. We watched it live on TV. And as expected, many segments looked much better on the screen than in the stadium. And again my favorite performance was K.D. Lang singing Leonard Cohen's song Hallelujah.
After the ceremony we did a walk through Yaletown and then ended up at Jimmy's across the street. Yaletown was packed!

Torch relay

all of us

We went to see the torch arrive at Vancouver Live City.

And on the way home we did a detour to the Olympic clock. There were tons of people. Everybody wanting to pose in front of the clock. So did we :)

Dress Rehearsal

We were at the dress rehearsal tonight for the Opening Ceremony. All the talent (not allowed to say who they are) was present, Prime Minister Stephen Harper, Premier Gordon Campbell and Mayor Robertson and of course John Furlong who was in charge of it all.
Despite the fact that it was verboten to take images of the show, I still took a few with my cell phone. I will not publish them until Friday and I also will not say who the performers will be. But I think I will not reveal any secrets by saying that the ceremony will be just magical. It is a modern interpretation of Canada's history and present life. It is beautifully showcased. The singers are fantastic, the performers are fabulous, a lot will look much nicer on TV than what we saw at BC Place. It was a great show.

List of artists: Canadian Tenors (were not part of the act on Friday), Nikki Yanofsky, Nelly Furtado and Brian Adams, Sarah McLachlan, K.D. Lang, the Fiddlers on the Roof (people unknown to me), Opera Chick, Poetry Guy, Garou. I think these were the artists. And I believe that Donald Sutherland read the quotes.

The Bell Ice Cube by BC Place on Beatty Street

He is next... wanted to know where Rrrobson Strrreet is.

My street is a collection of pile-ons and "rent-a-fence"-fences.

Do you know these people?

This morning I went to the bank to deposit my December cheque from Google. This is of course always the biggest one of the year. So the teller looks at the cheque and then asks: how well do you know these people? My response: I don't know them I just use them. It's Google.

The games have begun, not officially but for me

Burrard Bridge at sundown.

S'Chörli isch im Fall himmeltrurig gsi. Drinnen spielte ein Bassgeiger und ein Handörgelimann. Die zwei waren sehr gut und brachten etwas Stimmung in die Bude.

We had dinner at the House of Switzerland on Granville Island with Petra and Owen.

Using 20 large robotic searchlights around English Bay, the canopy of the Vancouver sky is transformed by the local audience or individuals worldwide who design their own patterns via a website. Their light sculptures are visible from a distance of 15 kilometres and the pattern changes roughly every 12 seconds.

Boxing Kangaroo

Olympic village Vancouver

Jacque Rogge is getting his knickers in a knot again. This time it's about the kangaroo flag the Australian team displays in the Olympic Village. Emperor Rogge thinks it's too commercial. The representative of the Australian team thinks that the IOC should just focus on more important things. The Aussies have been displaying that flag for years now during sporting events. The flag represents a charity that teaches children fair play in sports.
It was announced on Sunday that the flag may stay.
My Boxing Kangaroo flag is on its way. I ordered one on Amazon as they are not yet available in stores here in Vancouver.

Grüezi! The Swiss moved in as well.

Photography is a way of feeling, of touching, of loving. What you have caught on film is captured forever... it remembers little things, long after you have forgotten everything.
