Empty roads

How are car commercials shot and where? There is never another car on the road, never mind cyclists or pedestrians in these short movie clips.

I know that a lot of car commercials are shot here in BC on the Sea-to-Sky highway which spans from Vancouver to Whistler. That specific highway is for the most part a busy two lane road. I wonder if the film crew closes the highway when they need to shoot a commercial and tell us commoners that there was a rock fall and the clean up crew is trying to clear up the road. Or how else is it done? Especially on a road where there is no alternative route…

Or what about those clips where an entire city seems to have no population? Does anybody know how they do it? Let me know!

Note, May 14: I just heard on the radio that part of the Sea-to-Sky highway will be closed for 30 minutes today. Ahhh, but it is raining...
