Search Engine Optimization

When I first got the Christmas Magazine up and running, years ago during the dot com hype, I thought that I will get rich too, like all the other webbies. Of course I had no clue how this would happen. Well, of course it has yet to happen...

Six years later reality has long since set in. Making money online is hard work. I just spend 2 ½ hours optimizing the title tags and meta descriptions of calla PHOTO. I do think that I have a good understanding of how search engines work, and what improves the ranking. The best example is the Christmas Magazine. Which I optimized the other day. Years ago the CM was listed on page 100-something when searching for "christmas" on Google. A couple of months ago I found it on page 10. This week it was on page 8. It has come a long way especially considering the competition.

Searching for "royalty free stock images flowers" on Google calla PHOTO shows up on page 5. That was quite surprising to me as I was not expecting it to be this high. Turning the phrase slightly to "flowers royalty free stock images" lists it on page 4. Cool. But still, I want it all to be on page 1.

Reality TV or "unscripted TV shows" and celebrities

Donald Trump was the first one to enter the reality TV scene with his show "The Apprentice". I love his show, even though after the first season the focus was less on the tasks but more on product placement and showing off The Donald. Donald is a charming, self-centered PR machine.

After Donald came Tyra Banks with her "America's Next Top Model". The tasks are very interesting but the rest of the show has no weight.

We have Tommy Hilfiger with "The Cut", Kathy Hilton with "Who wants to be a Hilton?". Martha Stewart will premiere with her Hausfrau reality show ones she's done with her house arrest. Heidi Klum has some show. These are only the ones I can think of at the moment.

TV really has changed over the last few years. The dramas are disappearing more and more and unscripted TV shows are taking over. This may be because there are so few good writers out there. Or is it that good writing just does not make it onto the small or big screen. Let's face it Hollywood produces mostly garbage too. Maybe good screen writing has no chance because the audience can not handle an intelligent story. This is very sad.

Claim number 3000174

Well, I just got back from the post office. I was promised weeks ago by BMW Canada that they would send me an owner's manual for my car. I found it a bit strange that it did not fit in the mail box. But maybe they included some high gloss catalogues of their fancy cars to entice me to buy a newer version of German engineering.

That was wishful thinking. All of it! Instead I was handed a crumpled up version of Marco's birthday gift. That sucks! I am really mad now! I even bought f...ing bubble wrap!

Where has time gone...?

Flickr is getting out of hand. It is amazing how many great photographs can be found on that web site. One can get lost by surfing through the wonderland of inspiration. Now I actually want to go the big city and shoot some images myself. But it very much looks like it's going to rain any second.

Career opportunity

Well, I just submitted my portfolio to a large and well known stock image provider. I wonder if they will accept my work... It would be just so awesome if I could earn some more money with work that I really love doing.

Working on a birthday gift

The gift is for a nature lover, hobby photographer, and wine lover who turns forty this month and happens to be my brother. (Ivo, be quiet!)

The original idea was to buy a book by Ansel Adams. Then I thought I should capture a part of the west coast rain forest. Well that was much more difficult to achieve than I thought. After the forest did not work out I changed direction and now want to produce just the perfect picture of red wine.
